A climbing vine in the cannabis family. Don't worry, it contains no THC. The plant's white flowers, known as cones, are then used in the brewing process.

There are many varieties of hops that are particular to their region of origin. Home brewers should research the type of beer he wants to make, and choose his hops accordingly. One, distinctly North American, is the Cascade Hops. These pellet hops are the most popular in North America due to their versatility. Developed in Oregon in 1972, Cascade hops are a cross between fuggles and the Russian variety Serebrianker. They have an Alpha Acid of 4%-7.5%, and lend themselves suitable for either lagers or ales. A hop with a strong spicy note, and slightly floral with a bit of grapefruit.

There are so many aroma and flavor combinations, you'll just have to get out there and experiment. Think about what you like, and pick out the flavors, and try to recreate it. There's nothing more satisfying than kicking back and popping the bottle of your own delicious brew.
